The term "Ma'am" is age-dependant. Here in the south, children are taught very young to say, "Yes Ma'am" and "No Ma'am" as a term of respect. I love that about the South. Kids and grown-ups alike never refer to casual acquantences by their first names only... it's, "Miss Laurie" or "Mr. Ben." I love that too.
What I hate is how convenience clerks in the north call every woman with crows feet "Ma'am." That's when I get pissy. It's, "Miss" thankyouverymuch.
Now see, I'd rather be called Ma'am instead of dude LOL For me it doesn't signify an age thing but a respect thing. Anyone that calls me dude, gets a kick in the ass; just ask my son!

Robin! Dude!!!
I agree. Ma'am is so super formal and tacks about 10 more years onto your age. Eeeesh...

My favorite to say is "M'Lady." But that's because I wish I British. .. with out the bad teeth.

mcgibfried - Thank-you ma'am
Laura - I still don't know why it bugs me so much but I think you're right, my Grandmother was a ma'am.
CaliGirl - Miss is cool with me.
Robin - you're right respectful terms are great...but I'm in the north and here it just seems like 'thank-you old chick' to me.
Spider - M'lady works just fine!
Kim - I hear you ma'am!!!
Why don't you just reply back with, "What's that you're sayin' there, sonny?"
Ainse - Or pup!?
