Anybody have any advice on what kind of digital camera I should buy? I'm not a great photographer, but I'd like to take it up as a hobby. I'm thinking of getting the Canon A85? What do you think???
Well, I don't know much about that particular camera, but Canon makes some good stuff, so I imagine this one is no different. Of course, what you buy depends on several factors: 1) If you're looking for a starter, don't spend a lot of money. You want something that will take good pictures, but you don't need to go all out to buy the very best and top of the line (not until you know you want to do this a lot!)Don't get the cheapest thing you can find though... they have more problems than its worth. 2) Make sure the digital is easy to use in conjuction with your PC. Digital cards are nice, plug-ins are nice... I have a Mavica that writes to a small CD that is also quite nice. 3) But your camera from a reputable shop that has GREAT customer service. Since you're just starting out, you want to make sure you have someone to hold your hand and help you over the initial bumps. 4) Don't get hung up on pixels... unless you plan on blowing your pictures up VERY LARGE, you don't need to go with the highest pixels.
Canons are nice cameras. If this will be your first digital camera, it looks like it has what you'll need. I have a FujiFilm FinePix 3800 (which I think they don't make anymore), and it is wonderful. It was a good starter camera for myself, but my wife has been using it recently and has decided to try and be semi-pro. She wants to upgrade to a Nikon D70 (which we'll probably get next month for her b-day). Anyways, I'd recommend Canon and FujiFilm. I'd stay away from Sony brands, as all the people that I know that got one hate them. Also, 3x optical zoom (like on the Canon A85) is ok, but something like 6x will be even nicer. Just ignore the digital zoom, it's crap. It just pixalates everything.
i have a canon a85, and i love it. i also have a digital rebel, but i use the a85 more since it's smaller. i picked up the a85 off the web (newegg.com had the best price at the time, but eCost usually has some good deals, too). my film slr is also a canon, so i'm a little biased. the a85 is fairly simple to use, but has a lot of advanced features if you want to experiment later on down the road.
I got a camera over the holiday season, and I love it. It's not a major purchase or anything ($130 or so, I think. Under $200 for sure), but I only wanted a camera for my personal use, nothing professional. One thing I can tell you: Look for Optical Zoom instead of Digital Zoom. If a camera has both, no problem. If it only has Digital, keep it movin' Sister! :) I don't know anything about any of the brands -- I only know my camera. :) Good luck!!
Buying the perfect camera is very personal, as it depends on what you want to do with it. Do you want to take just nice snapshots (nothing wrong with that) or are you planning to be more creative in the future (photoblog?).
The A85 is a very nice camera. But if you feel you may get hooked on photography, think about investing in a camera that will grow with your creativeness (like the Canon Powershot G6).
Again Hannah....one day I hope to be able to take pictures half as well as you do :) Thanks for your advice....I think I'll be okay making a choice now.
