So I get up this morning and take the puppy for a walk, and as soon as we get back in the front door he starts doing this crazy thing with his paws to his face...and he sounds like he's choking...and he just keeps putting his paws up to his face with his mouth open and making these choking sounds. So I am freaking thinking if he's choking I have like 2 minutes max to get it out of his throat...so I stick my fingers down his throat...nothing...I'm feeling around in his mouth, under his tongue...he's still acting like he needs the heimlich maneuver and of course I have absolutely no idea how to give the heimlich maneuver to a dog... so I'm bawling thinking my dog is dying and I don't know what to do...then I find it...a piece of wood, bark or something, is wedged between his teeth on the top of his mouth...you know, like a retainer?

my old dog did something like that too, except instead of a piece of bark it was one of the caramel squares and instead of it being stuck in his teeth, it was in his throat....and i had to stick my hand down there to fish out this long gooey string.

having a dog is fun like that.

Oh yeah. I had a bone get stuck up there once and the dog was freaking out. We couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. Very scary. Cute dog, btw.

Bark! Bark! (in the) Roof! Roof! (of my) Wouf! Wouf!

(because, of course, everyone knows that dogs can't make the letter "m" and so they use a "w")

It freaks you out the first time it happens. Next time you'll be thinking "Ok, I know how to handle this." third thru whatever...."Why can't you stop eating fucking bark and twigs!"

Your poor puppy! I would have been freaked out. My pup is always doing something to scare me...like stealing and eating the WHOLE turkey carcass (every last bone) then getting really sick..I swear he was going to die trying to pass it!
I hope your puppy is smarter!

I had that happen with my late doggy... Except it was a with a chicken bone he stole from the trash. Growing up we had a siamese kitty that had a fetish with needles and thread and he did it once with a needle!! Horrifying experience and I'm ever sorry you had to deal with it babe!

((hugs))

how traumatic! you dealt with it really well - i'm sure I would have panicked, hopped about lots and cried and not done anything remotely practical.

OMG! My lab did that when she was a pup, and I did the exact same thing! I really freaked because she had a few seizures as a pup. That's unbelievable!

Hi, I was out blogging and found your site. It certainly got my attention and interest. I was looking for Toys information and even though this isn't a perfect match I enjoyed your site. Thanks for the read!

That is weird since a friend of mine just told me the same story about her dog. She called a friend that works at the vets and was told to check the roof of his mouth and sure enough, he had a stick lodged up there.
